For 30 minutes BU men’s basketball captured the attention of not only Boston but the nation’s basketball fans, in their attempt to pull off the most improbable upset in NCAA history. Playing with the swagger and confidence of a team that had played on the biggest stage multiple times, the Terriers traded baskets throughout the first half drawing standing ovations at each stoppage from the BU faithful.

Even after a Kansas onslaught coming out of halftime, the Terriers found themselves trailing by just six points with 9:26 remaining after a Dom Morris (’14) 3-pointer chipped into the Kansas lead. 30 minutes, 34 seconds of BU basketball, but it wasn’t enough to stop the high-powered, top seeded Kansas attack.

From Unwanted Teen to Savior: Brendan Sullivan’s Tale

The story of Brendan Sullivan and his rocky five year on and off relationship with the Boston University Men's Basketball Program.

The free-throw shooter bounced the ball once, twice, and released it. Boston University’s starters sat laughing and chatting, watching the bench play out the final 19 seconds of a blowout. The Marist fans, unable to endure their team’s play, trickled out as the ball bounced off the rim and into Brendan Sullivan’s hands. As his feet hit the floor he held the ball high above his head and put the ball off the glass and through the cylinder. Two points, one basket.

BU’s bench jumped up and screamed wildly, awakening from a daze to cheer on the teammate they called Sully with calls of “Four years, finally!” His father, uncle and brother stood behind the bench clapping and beaming, cheering on the fifth-year player. Sullivan quietly turned around and hustled down the court to play defense. After three years, eight months and 26 days, two dismissals from the team and a whirlwind of turmoil, Brendan Sullivan had finally made a basket again in a Terriers uniform.
